DA unhappy that there is no improvement in the Germiston CBD

Mayor’s programme shows no change to poor CBD conditions.

The DA in Ekurhuleni is once again challenging the executive mayor, Mzwandile Masina, to deliver on his Siyaqhuba promises.

“The mayor’s ‘weekend special’ programme continues to fail the residents of Germiston.

“The programme, which was supposed to run in the Germiston CBD recently, was meant to fix and repair roads, deliver on waste removal and implement municipal by-laws,” said Clr Wendy Morgan, DA Ward 36 councillor and Clr Sally Nene, DA PR councillor in Ekurhuleni.

This two-week programme was implemented to urgently address the state of Germiston by repairing the potholes and beautifying the CBD, in an effort to stimulate growth in the CBD and attract investment.

“A month later and the results of the mayor’s flagship programme are unnoticeable.

“In Victoria Street, one of the main entrances to the city, there are parts of the road which are crumbling and huge potholes litter the road.

“The smell of waste and sewage fills the air and running water from a building on Victoria Street runs down into a blocked storm-water drain,” said the councillors.

“The storm-water system in front of the buildings, from 114 to 130 Victoria Street, between Simmer Road and Odendaal Street, is completely blocked and the manhole is standing open with no covers as sewage floats on top.

“A certain hazard for pedestrians who use this busy pavement to get to their offices.”

The councillors went on to say that there are numerous burst water pipes at the intersection of Odendaal and Joubert streets and the water is flowing out from beneath the tar.

“The storm-water drain outside 17 Joubert Street is blocked with old rubbish.

“There is also an open manhole with electrical cables and connections, swimming in water,” said the councillors.

“Siyaqhuba is a programme which once again doesn’t deliver meaningful change to the residents of Ekurhuleni.

“Mayor Masina boasts about delivery to Germiston, but a simple trip down busy Victoria Street tells different story, one of failure and lack of delivery.

“We, the people of Ekurhuleni, deserve more.”
