EWC students showcase their skills to the world

Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) has representation at the World Skills competition.

Eight Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) students are at the WorldSkills Competition, currently taking place at the Durban International Convention Centre.

The competition started on Monday, February 13, and will run until Friday, February 17.

EWC’s students are competing against hundreds of other contestants in electrical construction, mechatronics, hairdressing, cooking services and restaurant services, among others.

EWC Germiston campus held a ceremonial send-off on Wednesday for all EWC students heading to the competition.

“Our six campuses competed against each other and we then selected students to compete in the provincial stage of the competition,” said the campus manager at EWC Kempton campus, Wellington Mudau.

“The EWC students competed with students from other colleges at the provincial stage and, due to their excellent performances, they progressed to the national stage of the competition.

“Our students are not only representing EWC but they are also among those representing Gauteng.”

EWC Germiston campus’ principal, Hellen Ntlaleng, addressed the students and their mentors at the ceremony.

“If you can’t imagine it, you can’t do it and that is what this college believes in,” she said.

“We know that you will make it because you are fully prepared; I say to you that the sky is the limit.

“Show them a thing or two and make all of us proud, including yourselves.”

One of the students, Khomotso Mashego, said she is excited and nervous at the same time.

“I am very happy for the opportunity because not everyone is getting it, but at the same time I am nervous because I don’t know the people I am competing against,” she said.

“I am willing to learn and have fun; I am not going to be put down but to learn and build myself up.”

Mudau also said that students who make it at the national stage will represent South Africa at the international competition that is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, later in the year.

The eight students are:

  • Kyle Ritchie – electrical installations.
  • Khomotso Mashego – restaurant services.
  • Bongani Mashego – electrical installations.
  • Busisiwe Magasela – restaurant services.
  • Mègan Kemp – food preparation services.
  • Jonathon Hamman – restaurant services.
  • Sakhe Majodina – mechatronics.
