The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina visited his former school, Mpontsheng Secondary School in Katlehong, to give back to needy learners by donating 200 uniforms, recently.
In addition to celebrating its 30 years of existence, the school was also celebrating a 2016 matric pass rate of 91 per cent.
“The visit to the school is close to my heart as I completed my matric in this very same school,” said Masina.
“I just want you to know that nothing is impossible in life. If you can leave here knowing that you can do it, you will go a long way in life.”
Masina came from a difficult background, but despite this he still managed to graduate with a master’s degree from the University of Pretoria.
“When I grew up I faced the same problems as you are facing now. There were times where we had to sleep on an empty stomach because there was no food in the house. We were a family of seven. I was the second child in the family. Our house had only one bedroom, which was used by our parents. My siblings and I had to share the sitting room and a kitchen. But I worked hard because I wanted to change the situation in my home.
“After I finished studying, I came back to change the situation at home. Today we have a nice house where each and everyone has his or her own bedroom. If we could do all that, what can stop you from doing the same?” said Masina.
Masina ended his speech by promising all the learners that if they work hard in life, they will be rewarded with bursaries to go to university.
Young South African scientist Siyabulela Xuza also attended the celebrations to motivate the learners.
Xuza had a planet named after him in honour of his work in developing a record-breaking rocket and creating safer, more energy-efficient rocket fuel.
He told learners there is nothing that can stop them from becoming successful in life.
