They are still battling to come to terms with the sudden death of their son and to make the situation worse, they do not feel the matter has been handled properly by the authorities. Marie and Piet Coetzer are mourning the death of Marie’s son Jaco Basson (24), who was killed in a collision between his motorcycle and a bakkie on New Year’s Eve, at the corner of Willow and Rietfontein roads, Primrose (Biker dies in Rietfontein Road accident).

January’s council meeting got off to a shaky start in the Germiston council chambers with female EFF councillors feeling unsafe. The cause of the commotion was centred around Ward 96 councillor, Clr Stenias Mashala, who was recently arrested by the Putfontein police for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The female councillors claimed they didn’t feel safe so close to a “woman abuser” and that to allow him to continue to sit in the chambers would reflect poorly on the metro as a whole.

Tragedy struck an Elsburg family, when their three-year-old son perished in a fire at their home, recently. The fire in Van der Merwe Street, Elsburg, gutted the entire house. The boy’s mother and two-year-old sister, who were also in the house at the time, survived the blaze. Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) received a call at about 9.16am.

A man was shot in his leg by the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend in Moscow Lane, Reedville, in Springs, recently, reported the Springs Advertiser. Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora said the man allegedly called his ex-girlfriend and asked for the keys to her room. She then asked him to leave her alone. “The woman and her new boyfriend returned home at 12.10am and found the ex-boyfriend waiting for them in his car,” said Ramphora.

A West Rand resident, Ruan Welman, was indignant when he visited Leratong Hospital, recently, Roodepoort Record reported. Welman and his father were about to leave when they saw a baby, according to him, not older than a year, locked in a luxury German vehicle. They decided to wait for the driver to confront him. After 30 minutes the driver, a man, returned.
