Youngsters’ dreams of tertiary education come true

Three local youngsters get Peermont Education Trust bursaries.

Over the past 15 years Peermont has been funding students with full bursaries for tertiary education.

And in 2017 three of the 10 lucky candidates who have been awarded prestigious bursaries from the Peermont Education Trust (PET) are from Katlehong and Spruitview.

The three, Lindokuhle Zondo, Sibongile Mothapo and Katleho Mollo were selected from hundreds of applicants and had to make it through a stringent selection and interview process with a panel of judges before receiving their official scholarship letters at an induction function at Emperors Palace, last Friday.

Having matriculated from Phumlani Secondary School at the end of last year with six distinctions Zondo will be doing a BSc health sciences degree at Wits, while Mothapo will follow her dreams and do a BEng electrical degree, at the University of Pretoria, after matriculating from Leondale High School with six distinctions at the end of 2016.

Mollo, also a Phumlani Secondary School matriculant who obtained five distinctions, is also off to Wits to start his BCom accounting degree thanks to the trust.

Apart from having their tuition and accommodation expenses covered, these fortunate students will receive workshop and psychological support to sustain them through the academic year.

“Over the years we have found that we are able to increase our graduation rate by offering learners additional support throughout the year.

“Due to this the trust has an impressive 85 per cent graduation rate.

“This is exceptional considering that the learners hail from township schools, where the national graduation rate is 22 per cent,” said trust manager, Jenny Findlay.
