Firefighters’ quick response contains blaze

A fire at an Elandsfontein factory was quickly brought under control on Thursday morning.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services’ (DEMS) firefighting crews, from the Primrose Fire Station, raced to a factory fire in Kraft Road, Elandsfontein, on Thursday.

They received the call at about 5am and prior to arriving on the scene requested backup from both the Bedfordview and Edenvale fire stations.

“Upon arrival, it was found that a rubbish bin and fork-lift tyres near the perimeter wall were on fire.

“Two attack lines were immediately established to contain and extinguish the blaze, working directly from the nearby fire hydrants,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“As per information gathered on the scene, the fire started inside the rubbish bin and spread to the old tyres which were lying outside the bin and against the wall.

“The rapid intervention was great, taking into consideration the risk the main factory structures were subjected to.”

No casualties were recorded on scene as a result of the fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation.

The scene was declared safe at about 7.30am and all firefighters returned to base.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officers also responded to the scene and electricians were called out as the traffic lights on the corner of North Reef and Kraft roads, where the factory is situated, were out of order.

The officers performed point duty until about 9.30am in order to alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
