Man allegedly lies about hijacking

Police discover man has given a false statement and arrest him for perjury.

Officers from the Katlehong South Police Station recently arrested a 28-year-old man for perjury after they discovered he had lied about a hijacking.

It is alleged that the accused reported that he had been hijacked and his car stolen after he agreed to take the vehicle to a local mechanic after an accident.

He told the police that the mechanic had been suggested to him by the driver involved in the accident.

“He claimed that when he arrived the other driver and a group of men held him at gunpoint and took the vehicle,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, of the Ekurhuleni West Cluster.

“During the investigation that followed officers discovered that the hijacking had never happened and that the man had given a false statement when opening the case.”

He was arrested and is being held at the Katlehong South Police Station pending his appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
