Biker dies in Rietfontein Road accident

A biker was killed in a high speed collision on Rietfontein Road.

A case of culpable homicide was opened with the Primrose police after the death of a motorcyclist in a New Year’s Eve accident.

The accident took place at the corner of Willow and Rietfontein roads, in Primrose, on the afternoon of December 31.

An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team and paramedics from the Primrose Fire Station responded to the crash between a bakkie and motorbike at 3.52pm.

It is alleged that the collision was of high magnitude, as seen by the damage to the bike.

“On arrival, personnel found the motorbike in pieces and the 24-year-old biker lying a couple of metres away from the actual point of the collision,” said William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Pre-hospital medical treatment was initiated and unfortunately, the patient didn’t respond positively and was declared dead on-scene.”

The driver and passenger of the bakkie escaped the accident with minor injuries and were not transported to hospital.

The EMPD were called to the scene to perform a preliminary investigation, in which it was determined that the bakkie had t-boned (hit on the side) the bike.

It was claimed that the driver of the vehicle was a minor and that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Lieut Kobeli Mokheseng, the spokesman for the EMPD, said that this, however, was not the case.

“The driver of the vehicle was a 21-year-old man.

“A breathalyser was done on-scene but showed no alcohol in the driver’s system, and though there were bottles of alcohol in the vehicle, they were all sealed.”

The Primrose police have confirmed that they are still investigating the case.
