Following the recent heavy rain downpours across the metro, Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) warns residents, industrial and business communities to be extra alert for potential flooding.
Those in flood prone areas are advised to be on high alert.
“Flooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels, such as streams and storm water drain systems.
“It occurs also when there is a prolonged period of rain, with continuous heavy falls – or in the form of flash floods, which are usually associated with severe thunderstorms,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for the metro.
“Heavy rain may also result in rivers, canals, open trenches and furrows flooding, causing damage to low lying bridges and downstream areas; that may receive no rainfall at all during the flooding event.”
DEMS in collaboration with the South African Weather Service (SAWS), cautions people to stay indoors and off the roads, in heavy rain.
If you are on the roads, avoid crossing low lying bridges and swollen streams, where the water is above ankle level.
“Baptism in rivers and streams spells danger in such weather, as water levels are high and should be avoided,” Ntladi said.
“In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.
“Switch off the electricity, at the supply point to the building.
“In rural areas, protect/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.
“Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended, before access is cut off by flood water.
“Never drive on a road covered by flood water. You don’t know how deep it is or if the road has been washed away.
“If the vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
“Be extra vigilant at night when it’s harder to recognise flood dangers.”
Ntladi added that residents should listen out for warnings – and must obey the instructions of disaster management officials at all times.
DEMS is on high alert for any eventualities that might occur, as a result of heavy rains.
In case of an emergency:
- Call 011 458-0911, cellphone 112, or the national emergency number: 10177.
- Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed, for everyone to know and to use.
- Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.
- Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.
- Don’t end the conversation until all questions are answered.
