Community stop armed robbery

A man was beaten by the Katlehong South community after he allegedly attempted to rob a local tuck shop.

A 21-year-old man was recently arrested by the Katlehong South police and charged with attempted armed robbery.

The arrest was made in Moleleki Extension Four after the man and an accomplice attempted to rob a foreign-owned tuck shop at gunpoint.

“When community members heard the screams of the shop’s staff member they rushed to the scene, chasing the suspects away.

“The mob managed to catch the accused and he was beaten before police were called to the scene,” said Capt Mage Ndobe, from the Ekurhuleni West Cluster.

During the man’s arrest it was discovered that the firearm used in the robbery was a toy gun.

He was taken to the Katlehong South Police Station, pending his appearance in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

“We appreciate the community’s efforts but do not condone mob justice,” Ndobe said.

Police continue to search for the second man involved in the incident.
