Accused fires five shots at fleeing victim

Man flees from four men after alleged armed robbery.

Four men, aged between 31 and 42 years old, were recently arrested by the Primrose police.

The men were arrested at the corner of Mc Alpine and Geldenhuis roads in Malvern East and charged with armed robbery, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.

The arrests were made after the victim was able to flag down passing Germiston Flying Squad officers.

“He told police that he had been withdrawing money from an ATM in Jules Street when he first noticed the four accused.

“He left the ATM and drove toward Primrose, where he claimed the same vehicle blocked his path at the corner of Mc Alpine and Geldenhuis roads,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

One of the suspects allegedly approached the victim, who was still in his vehicle, pointed a firearm at him and demanded to know why he had taken his bank card.

“Confused, the complainant took out his wallet to show the man that he only had his own bank card, but the accused grabbed it and demanded his wallet,” said Maome.

The man dived out of his idling car and ran down Mc Alpine Road.

“The man and his three passengers gave chase, during which the driver allegedly fired five shots at the fleeing victim,” said Maome.

Realising that they would not be able to catch him, the men returned to the complainant’s vehicle and began to kick and hit the car, before stealing a number of belongings.

The Flying Squad officers were able to track down the men, using the descriptions given by the victim.

They were arrested and held at the Primrose Police Station pending their appearance in court.

The men have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where the case was postponed for plea and trial.
