Be safe this festive season, says DEMS

DEMS out-and-about educating the community to have a safe festive season.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is currently rolling out a safety awareness campaign throughout the metro.

As one of the metro’s objectives, the department wants to warn communities to be alert at all times as life-threatening emergencies are more prevalent over the festive season.

“Emergencies such as flash floods, lightning strikes, thunderstorms, including hail storms and heatwaves are highly likely during the summer season,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“All such have the potential of devastating effects on human life.”

Ntladi said another important aspect of the campaign will be educating motorists on the importance of buckling-up and making sure their children are in proper child restraint seats.

“Children become projectiles during accidents and this could lead to what was potentially a minor incident becoming an extremely huge and fatal incident,” Ntladi said.

“Motorists are encouraged to buckle-up at all times no matter how short the trip is.”

Public information, education and relations (PIER) officers, together with disaster management officers, will be seen in different areas around the metro engaging with communities in various ways.

Shopping centres and major intersections are some of the targeted areas to spread the summer safety messages.

DEMS will be on high alert throughout the festive season.
