Metro pleads for residents’ patience with regards to refuse removal problem

The executive mayor’s office gives feedback on the refuse removal issues plaguing Germiston.

The metro apologises to the community of Greater Germiston for the recent hiccup in waste removal services, which has resulted in a major backlog in the area.

The interruption, which is a result of workers going on a go-slow demanding more overtime pay, has seen waste piling up in various parts of Germiston, including Elsburg, Wadeville, Sunnyridge, Dinwiddie, Albemarle, Lambton, Elandsfontein and many more suburbs.

“We have put plans in place to deal with this massive backlog and plans are in place to ensure that the service is normalised as soon as possible,” said Zweli Dlamini, from the office of the executive mayor.

“We have teams working day and night to deal with the backlog.

“We have also pulled resources from other parts of the region to ensure that this backlog is set aside.”

The metro will soon be engaging the workers with regards to their grievances to ensure that the root of the problem is dealt with.

“As a city we understand the frustrations of our people in this regard and sincerely apologise to our communities for this unfavourable position,” Dlamini emphasised.

“We appeal for a little bit more patience from the community as we deal with this problem.”

The mopping up operations started on Wednesday, and will run until the backlog is resolved.
