Spotlight on the elderly

Wisdom was appreciated at Breakthrough Ministries Church.

All the energy and focus was put on the elderly at the Breakthrough Ministries Church in Leondale, last Saturday.

The church’s senior citizen committee took it upon themselves to organise an event that was aimed at shining the light on the elderly at the church and in the community.

“We want to honour our elderly for their wisdom and the life experience we don’t have,” said the committee’s chairman, Hilda Madiba.

“Through their wisdom, they teach us how to go about life.

“Most of the infrastructure we see today is a result of their hard work and so we just wanted to embrace and show them love and reassure them that they still have value in the community, their families and in the country at large.”

As part of the pampering, Global Business Round Table sponsored the event with neck and shoulder massages for the elderly.

“Massages are good for blood circulation, and proper circulation leads to a healthy body,” said Puleng Moloi, Global Business Round Table’s Leondale chairman.

“It is rather vital to stimulate blood circulation for the elderly through massages because often as they grow older they become inactive.

“Proper blood circulation assists with the transportation of nutrients and medication throughout the body.”

Also present at the event was the church’s pastor and his wife, Pastor Vusi and Busi Radebe.

“We are excited because we are also among the elderly,” said Vusi.

“Our doors and facilities are open to the community especially the aged for their meetings, among other events.”

Retired nurse, Noma Sibanyoni, addressed the aged about good health and emphasised the importance of educating themselves about illnesses, treatment and prevention.

Diabetes, high and low blood pressure and arthritis were among the topics discussed.

Those present also had the opportunity to ask Sibanyoni questions.

Leondale resident, Lizzie Khoza, expressed her emotions about the event with the GCN.

“I am very happy and humbled by the act of kindness displayed through this event,” she said.

“We seldom meet as the elderly; I wish we could have more of such events.

“We appreciate all that our pastor and his wife do for us; they have shown that they love us and we love them too.

“Thank you to the committee and everyone involved for making this day special for us.”
