School struggles to cope without water

Germiston High School was left without water for several days, without a clear explanation why.

Last Wednesday, November 16, in the middle of exams Germiston High School was left without a drop of water.

The school immediately reported the matter to the metro’s call centre and asked what had caused the outage.

“We were first told that the reservoir that feeds the area had run dry, thus causing the water outage.

“The next time we called to follow up on the progress we were told it was a burst pipe at Germiston Lake causing the outage and finally we were told the outage hadn’t been reported.

“A different story each time we called,” said a staff member of the school.

The school staff grew more and more worried with each passing hour as students, teachers and staff were unable to use the school’s bathrooms, or get water to drink.

To combat the outage the school claimed they requested a tanker be sent to the school; their request, however, was refused.

The GCN sent an urgent query to the metro to find out what the actual cause of the outage was and what areas had been left without water as a result.

“The school was without water due to a burst pipe that happened inside the Germiston Lake property.

“The school and the Germiston Golf Course were the only two properties affected by the outage,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro.

The burst pipe was attended to on Friday, November 18, and water was restored.

The metro claimed they received no request for a tanker from the school.
