Susie’s month-long search finally gets her home

Thanks to the help of Graham Mephius Susie was reunited with her family.

Susie had been walking the streets for over a month.

But this was not known by Graham Mephius when he found the Labrador lying at his driveway gate, last Friday (November 11).

“She looked beautiful even though she was drenched and shivering from the cold,” said Graham.

“When the gate was opened she came in and I’m sure if she could speak she would have said: ‘Give me a bit of warmth and a bowl of food and I’ll be on my way again’.

“An immediate sense of responsibility kicked in.

“The SPCA was called and a WhatsApp was posted on our local community group.”

Graham added that Johannes Rabalao from the Germiston SPCA arrived in his bakkie about an hour later, with two other dogs in the back.

“We had a quick chat and it was decided that our visitor was not going with Johannes but rather to our local vet for a microchip scan,” he added.

“If she did not have a chip we would keep her until the owner contacted us.

“Failing that, we would adopt this lovely well-behaved dog.”

Graham told the GCN that to his and the vet’s amazement, the handheld scanner blipped when it was “swiped” over the dog’s neck.

“Half a minute later the computer told us that her name was Susie and who the rightful owners were.

“When she heard her name her ears pricked up and she looked at us with great surprise,” Graham said.

The owner was contacted and he told the vet that they had given up on finding Susie.

She had gone missing more than a month ago from her Alberton North home.

“Somehow Susie had survived from one day to the next for 30-odd days.

“It’s about 15kms from where she had gone missing to where she was found, in Piercy Avenue,” said Graham.

Just before closing time that Friday evening Graham went back to the Lambton Veterinary Clinic to see if Susie had been collected.

“Yes, Susie’s family had come and I was told it was a very emotional reunion.

“Thanks to modern technology and a few people along the way, Susie found her way back home.

“She never gave up on humanity,” a delighted Graham said.
