Katlehong South police arrested nine suspects for various offences last Tuesday, November 14.
The arrests were made during a number of stop-and-search operations held throughout the area by members of the Katlehong Crime Prevention Unit and detectives from the Katlehong South Police Station.
Charges included assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, common assault, shoplifting, warrant of arrest and the possession of drugs (including, dagga and nyaope)
Among the arrested suspects were two men, aged 32 and 34, who were arrested during a roadblock in the Siphamandla Section, for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
It is alleged that during the roadblock reservists stopped a black Opel Corsa, with three occupants.
“The men were asked to exit the vehicle while reservists searched it.
“During this time one of the men ran away, and a 9mm pistol with three rounds of ammunition was found under the passenger seat,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, for the Ekurhuleni West Cluster.
The remaining two occupants failed to produce a licence for the seized firearm.
The men were arrested and a search for the third man began.
“The firearm will be sent to ballistics for further investigation, to determine whether it has been used in crimes in the area,” said Ndobe.
All of the arrested suspects appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court where their cases were postponed for various reasons.
