Weather service warns of more severe thunderstorms today

The weather service has warned of severe thunderstorms in parts of Gauteng this afternoon.

The storm watch has continued this week with the South African Weather Service  predicting a 60 per cent chance of rain for Gauteng.

In addition to the prediction the service has released the following warnings for Gauteng:

  • Severe Thunderstorms:
Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds and reduced visibility expected in some areas of Gauteng from 1pm to 11pm.
These storms may result in flash floods in low lying areas.
  • High discomfort values:

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over some parts of Gauteng.
  • Veld fire conditions:

Veld fires could be experienced in places in the North of Gauteng.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions when travelling and are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances when driving.

Headlights should also be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.

The warning comes on the back of heavy rainfall which caused havoc in Ekurhuleni, last week.
