What a waste!

Elspark residents are upset after three fire hydrants gushed thousands of litres of water unabated for five hours.

With water-shedding now a reality, communities are making plans to ensure they have water while it is switched off.

Elspark residents, however, woke up with a shock, on Tuesday morning as they watched thousands of litres of water going to waste due to what they claim is an error by the metro.

When the water was turned back on after the first night of water-shedding, the metro also opened three fire hydrants in the area and water gushed out into the streets.

Chris van der Merwe and Jaco de Bruyn, from the Elspark CPF, told the GCN that they tried everything they could to shut the water off as the metro did not respond to their and other residents’ calls.

“When the water came back on at 5am the fire hydrants started gushing water.

“We called the metro numerous times but only at about 10am did they respond and come out and close the fire hydrants,” van der Merwe said.

Residents in the area are upset about the water loss and want answers from the metro.

“It would be interesting to know exactly how many litres of water were lost during those five hours,” de Bruyn said.

The GCN asked the metro for urgent comment on the matter and whether or not this would happen every time there was water-shedding in the area but no comment has been received as yet.
