When Wendy van Schalkwyk entered Cash Crusaders in Shamrock Road, on Wednesday, September 7 with her four daughters she had no idea the events that would unfold. “While my daughters and I were looking through the DVDs a woman approached me. She asked me if I had a problem with her, to which I said no. She became increasingly violent, so I told her clearly that if she hit me I would open a case of assault against her. She asked me why I thought she would hit me,” van Schalkwyk explained to the GCN. No sooner had she said this than she allegedly attacked van Schalkwyk, who was holding her five-year-old daughter in her arms at the time.

A Pretoria teenager suffered serious burn wounds when his shirt caught fire as he was helping a stranded woman with her car. Annerie Du Plooy of the Hero Burn Foundation said Sean Smith (16) was under sedation in Unitas Hospital in Centurion after the incident. “He suffered between 45 to 55 per cent burns internally and externally,” she said.

The metro warned the community that Germiston Lake Park and several roads would be closed from October 19 to 22, due to the OR Tambo SALGA Games. Nearby streets that were affected included Lake Road and Rand Airport Road.

The drug scourge facing South Africa has increasingly and adversely affected all corners of society. Families are always the first to suffer the negative effects associated with addiction, as addicts draw various members of the family unit into a web of lies and deceit whilst furthering their aims. In response the Germiston Support Group are inviting families of addicts to take part in group discussions.

When you take your dog for a walk in the park in Begonia Road, Primrose Hill, be careful where you step. You might find yourself stepping on a used condom or a condom wrapper. The GCN was told about the situation by a concerned resident, who walks his dog through the park every day. “The prostitutes bring their clients here every day, normally between 5pm and the early hours of the morning,” he said. “They use the back end of the park where it is slightly quieter, and you see a different car every half-an-hour or so.”
