A 76-year-old blind woman was found murdered in her home in Olivier Street, Elsburg, on Thursday, September 29. The Elsburg police rushed to the house after receiving a call from a neighbour at about 8.40pm, who informed them that he had seen three men coming out of the deceased’s home. “Upon arrival, the police found that the woman had been stabbed in her upper body with a sharp object,” said Const Daphney Phooko, the communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

When Wendy van Schalkwyk entered Cash Crusaders in Shamrock Road, on Wednesday, September 7, with her four daughters, she had no idea of the events that would unfold. “While my daughters and I were looking through the DVDs a woman approached me. She asked me if I had a problem with her, to which I said no. She became increasingly violent, so I told her clearly that if she hit me I would open a case of assault against her. She asked me why I thought she would hit me,” van Schalkwyk explained to the GCN. No sooner had she said this than she allegedly attacked van Schalkwyk, who was holding her five-year-old daughter in her arms at the time.

A domestic worker who fled to Mpumalanga with her boyfriend after stealing more than R500 000 cash has been tracked down. Police spokesman Capt Jethro Mtshali said Kempton Park police detective Frans Rafapa travelled to Nelspruit on Tuesday, after being tipped off about the domestic worker’s whereabouts.

Firefighters from Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded promptly to a house fire, recently. DEMS firefighters, responding from the Wadeville Fire Station, were backed up by the Hlahatsi Fire Station. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS, said the fire in Bagshot Avenue, Dinwiddie, happened at around 8.30am.

The Germiston SAPS are investigating a case of murder after a woman was shot and killed on September 16, in Delville. Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston police, said: “At about 11.30pm it is alleged the woman was followed from a pub in Delville. As the victim opened her gate a man approached her and started wrestling with her for her handbag.”
