An effective and efficient transport system is a catalyst for sustainable economic growth and as such the metro is geared up to promote safe, reliable and cost effective transport means.
To kick-start the month long Transport Month celebrations, the metro will provide free roadworthy testing for minibus taxis, buses and trucks at three of its testing stations, in Brakpan, Boksburg and Kempton Park, throughout October.
On October 14, the metro’s officials led by the MMC for transport, roads and planning Clr Petrus Mabunda will visit various taxi ranks to celebrate Taxi Day to inform commuters, taxi drivers and owners on the progress made on the metro’s bus rapid transit system, Harambee, and to raise awareness on the IRPTN (Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network).
Mabunda will on Tuesday, October 17 launch the Etwatwa Licensing Operationalisation facility, a programme which aims to decentralise the licensing services to previously disadvantaged communities.
The Etwatwa Licensing Operationalisation facility will offer services such as the renewal of motor vehicle licences, renewal of drivers’ licences, application for learners’ licences and learners’ licence classes.
On Thursday, October 20, it’s Car Free Day and as such the metro will join forces with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the Department of Education to donate over 1 000 bicycles to assist needy school children from across the metro through the “Shova-Kalula” project.
Furthermore, on October 28, the metro will convene a Transport Indaba, a platform for all Ekurhuleni transport industry stakeholders to meet and discuss issues of mutual interest.
The indaba, which will also involve the youth, will focus on issues affecting the local transport industry and propose possible solutions.
To conclude the month-long celebrations the metro will on October 31 host a prestigious award ceremony to honour staff members for their long service and dedication.
