The Primrose police closed down five illegal taverns and confiscated thousands of litres of alcohol in a recent operation.
The operation saw officers travelling to the Makause, Delport and Marathon informal settlements in an effort to crack down on the illegal sale of alcohol.
“The officers moved through the informal settlements on foot and visited several addresses.
“The owners of the taverns were asked for their liquor licences but they were unable to produce them,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
Five tavern owners were arrested for selling liquor without a licence.
All of the suspects, aged between 24 and 56 years old, paid an admission of guilt fine and were released with a warning.
