Two alleged copper cable thieves crushed under soil

DEMS worked tirelessly to recover two bodies from a trench in Knights.

An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team, SAPS members and the SAPS K9 Unit, worked together to recover two bodies, on Monday.

The bodies of two unknown men were crushed by soil in a trench in Knights Road, Knights.

“A rescue team responded to the scene immediately after receiving the call from a member of the public at about 11.45am.

“Upon investigation on the scene they found the two bodies crushed by a mass of soil inside the trench,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

Police officers and the SAPS K9 Unit were summoned to the scene for investigation.

“The team worked tirelessly throughout the day and managed to recover both bodies at about 5pm that afternoon,” Ntladi said.

“Preliminary information received on scene shows that the two were busy cutting the underground copper cables inside the trench when the soil gave way and collapsed on them.

“It is not known when the incident happened though it is believed that it might have happened over the weekend.”

The SAPS have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.
