Streets cleared of illegal hawkers again

The EMPD’s Operation Bumper to Bumper is still focusing on illegal hawkers.

The EMPD once again hit the streets of Germiston, last Thursday, in their Operation Bumper to Bumper, targeting illegal traders.

The operation took place between 2pm and 10pm and focused on Oosthuizen, Railway, Jack and Park streets.

“Traders without the necessary documentation decided to flee,” said Lieut Kobeli Mokheseng, media liaison officer for the EMPD.

“EMPD officers concentrated on the streets where the pavements were being obstructed by hawkers failing to adhere to regulations and hawkers who were selling counterfeit goods.”

Mokheseng added that genuine entrepreneurs had lodged a complaint that they were losing business due to illegal trading.

“Lawbreakers sighted us approaching and fled, leaving behind their goods.

“We confiscated furniture, second-hand clothing, counterfeit DVDs and CDs, perishables (fruit and vegetables) and brooms,” Mokheseng said.

The impounded goods can be re-claimed from the EMPD offices in Elsburg on payment of a R200 fine and R150 for storage fees.

Perishables are discarded if not claimed within 48 hours and a three to seven day grace period is afforded for non-perishables.
