Matrics reunite after 40 years

Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston welcomed back the matric class of 1976.

It has been 40 years since the matrics of 1976 sat in the Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston hall for their final exams.

“If you speak to our special guests, each can tell you where they sat for their final exams all those years ago,” said Linda Badenhorst, former student and teacher at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston, with a smile.

“Now, 40 years later, here we are again.”

Badenhorst was speaking at the group’s reunion at the school in Lambton, which was attended by 27 former students and three former teachers, last Friday.

The guests were introduced to the school’s governing body, teachers and several of the current sports teams.

They were given the opportunity to share in the achievements of Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston on the sports field, on the stage and in the classroom.

“It says so much about the school that so many students stay involved with it long after their years here are done,” said principal Retha du Toit.

The event ended with the former students handing over a cheque for R50 000 to the school.

“The class of 1976 has embraced the motto ‘pay it forward’ – and the donation of R50 000 shows our commitment and dedication to playing a meaningful and significant role in supporting the welfare of the school in the future,” said Monica du Plessis, one of the 1976 matrics.

In parting the class encouraged the young students to strive for their dreams and to never give up.

“Remember, if you are lucky enough to get old you should celebrate,” said Badenhorst.
