Ekurhuleni’s council meeting to elect new mayor underway

Things are running smoothly so far at the metro's council meeting.

Ekurhuleni’s inaugural council meeting since the August 3 local government elections is underway.

There was a sense of excitement as people sang outside the Germiston Civic Centre this morning.

The meeting is being presided over by secretary of council Nana Moloi as the city manager (who resigned a few days ago) is not in attendance.

Elected councillors have been sworn in and council is now preparing to vote for the new speaker.

The IEC will now step in to assist and guide the election of the speaker and councillors will vote via a secret ballot after role call.

There are 224 councillors present and the EFF has been asked to confirm and double-check if this is correct.

Currently the ANC holds 109 seats and the DA 79 seats.

The GCN will keep you updated as the meeting and voting process unfolds.
