New mayor for Ekurhuleni to be elected

Tuesday is set to be an exciting day for the metro’s council as a new mayor will be elected to office.

The metro will on Tuesday, August 23 know who will succeed Mondli Gungubele as the mayor of the region.

The metro will hold its inaugural council meeting since the August 3 local government elections.

All eyes will be on the new first citizen who is expected to be elected immediately after the election of the speaker of the house.

The city manager will preside over the inaugural meeting of council until the election of the speaker.

Thereafter, the newly elected speaker will preside over election of the executive mayor.

Ekurhuleni will be the last of the Gauteng metros to hold an inaugural council meeting after Tshwane and the City of Johannesburg metros held theirs on Friday and Monday, respectively.

The meeting will take place at 10am at the Germiston Council Chambers, situated at the Germiston Civic Centre on the corner of Queen and Cross streets, in the Germiston CBD.
