Illegal taverns raided

EMPD officers raided illegal taverns, arresting one and confiscating liquor.

The EMPD’s Bumper to Bumper operation continued, last Thursday, with raids on illegal taverns in Buhle Park Extension Three.

The raids were carried out between 2pm and 10pm and metro police officers confiscated dozens of bottles of liquor.

“At 3pm in Hare Road, an establishment licensed to solely sell food, was found to be illegally selling liquor.

“Twenty 750ml cases of beer were seized,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

The confiscated alcohol was loaded into vehicles by EMPD members and booked in at the Elsburg Police Station.

On Prima Facie Road in an illegally operated shebeen, 15 cases of beer and 20 cans of cider were confiscated.

On Delphinium Road, a 52-year-old tavern owner was arrested for illegally operating a tavern as his licence had expired in 2013 and he had failed to renew it.

Wine, beer, spirits and ciders estimated to be worth about R100 000 were confiscated. “Complaints of unbearable noise over the weekends, patrons urinating all over the show and the area being left littered with used condoms from this particular tavern had been received in the past,” said Kgasago.

All the confiscated liquor and the arrestee were booked in at the Elsburg Police Station.
