Illegal hawkers flee from EMPD

EMPD members descended on various streets in the Germiston CBD to remove illegal hawkers, recently.

The EMPD Bumper to Bumper special operations re-visited the Germiston CBD in an effort to clean-up the illegally obstructed pavements by hawkers refusing to comply with the metro’s by-laws, recently.

The operation took place between 2pm and 10pm targeting the problematic High Road, Jack Street, Railway Street, Plantation Road, Park Street and Rand Road.

“Pedestrians in the CBD are compelled to compromise their safety by walking in the roadway where there is moving vehicular traffic which poses a great danger to them caused by the illegal hawkers flooding the sidewalks,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

An illegal structure, which was left by a barber plying his trade illegally in Jack Street in the Germiston CBD, is removed.

“Hawkers plying their trade illegally on the pavements ran and abandoned their wares when the metro police approached.”

Numerous items of furniture and clothing which included, 85 pairs of boots, two base and mattress sets, one kitchen cupboard, three radio speakers, three floor carpets, 120 handbags, 20 winter jackets and six mannequins were confiscated.

In addition two petrol generators, a Hoover, 30 hangers, four belts, refuse bags, T-shirts, steel wool and a few perishable items such as apples were also seized.

The rightful owners of the seized wares will be required to produce operating permits and pay a penalty of R200 for trading illegally, as well as R150 for storage charged per day.

The confiscated goods are being stored at the EMPD Elsburg Precinct.
