Young woman demands ransom for herself

A young woman has been arrested after she pretended to be kidnapped and demanded ransom money.

A 21-year-old woman was arrested by the Alberton SAPS, on Monday, for faking her kidnapping.

“The young woman allegedly went to spend time with her boyfriend over the weekend,” said Sgt Phora Nkuna, communications officer for the Alberton SAPS.

“When her sister received a message from her cellphone, demanding a ransom, she alerted the police.

“The police spent the entire weekend investigating the matter, only to find the young woman at her place of residence in Phumula, near Leondale, safe and unharmed.”

When questioned the woman admitted that she had sent the message herself and she was arrested for defeating the ends of justice and is due to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon to answer to the charge.

“Community members must refrain from opening false cases, as that may get them arrested and charged,” Nkuna said.
