Illegal taverns in Katlehong raided by EMPD

The EMPD’s Bumper to Bumper operation is continuing and this time they are focusing on illegal taverns.

Obstinate owners of illegal taverns in Katlehong, bent on continuing to sell liquor without the required documentation, were revisited on Friday, by members of the EMPD.

This came after a similar operation was conducted in the area, recently.

Four tavern owners operating illegally were arrested and liquor valued at R105 000 was seized.

The special operation was conducted between 7pm and midnight, and eight taverns were raided.

Four were found to be operating legally, while four were conducting their establishments without licences.

The SGA Tavern, on Sontonga Street, was found to be operating illegally and the 36-year-old owner was arrested.

Various brands of 250ml, 330ml, 400ml and 500ml cider and several spirits, valued at R43 000, were confiscated.

The 42-year-old owner of Smart Kitchen Fast Foods, on Sontonga Street, in Palm Ridge Extension Five, also ended up behind bars, and huge quantities of wine, cider, a few spirits and 750ml bottles of beers estimated to be worth R21 000 were seized.

In Tsietse Section, at the intersection of Sontonga and Mnqandane streets, the 48-year-old owner of Ebhubesini Tavern was locked up for illegally selling liquor and cider; spirits and beers valued at R51 000 were confiscated.

In Moriting Street a 59-year-old woman operating a tavern without a licence at her Martin General Dealer shop was let off the hook, as she was found to be ill, but she was given a stern warning to stop trading illegally.

Three cases of beer were confiscated from her shop.

All the arrested suspects were taken to the Ramokonopi Police Station, where they were detained, after being charged with operating taverns without a valid licence.

They were expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, on Monday.
