Update: Criminals escape after horror crash

The alleged criminals who caused a serious accident on the N3 highway, on Monday, are still at large.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) personnel rushed to the scene of a collision between a taxi and a light motor vehicle, on the N3 north bound, near the Geldenhuys interchange, yesterday (Monday).

“It is believed that there was a high speed chase between the driver of the white Mercedes Benz and the police, whereby the sedan crashed into the back of the taxi full of passengers.

“The taxi driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled, landing on its roof,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Four taxi passengers were killed in the collision which happened at about 2pm.

“The entire highway was brought to a standstill and traffic was affected late into the evening.”

Another taxi passenger was critically injured and airlifted to hospital from the scene.

Eight others sustained serious but stable injuries and were transported to various hospitals within Ekurhuleni.

“The occupants of the sedan apparently managed to run away from the scene after the crash.

“EMPD and SAPS members are currently investigating,” said Ntladi.

So far no comment has been received from the Germiston SAPS on the incident.

Updates will follow as they become available.
