Local business celebrates Youth Month

Germiston South-based company Johnson Matthey SA held a Youth Day community crime walk and sports day, with support from the EMPD, SAPS and community of Dukathole.

June was Youth Month in the metro and, with this in mind, Germiston South-based company Johnson Matthey SA decided to host a community crime walk and sports day, last Saturday.

The day was planned for the community of Dukathole and its surrounding areas and saw the company partnering with the EMPD and Germiston police in what is hoped to be the first of many Youth Month celebrations.

“We want to make this a yearly event,” said Ndima Rawana, site services director for Johnson Matthey SA.

The event began with the community meeting on Main Reef Road before walking to the Dukathole Stadium.

During the walk, community members handed out pamphlets containing safety tips to motorists and other community members, in the hope of raising awareness about the crimes affecting residents in the area.

When they reached the stadium the real fun began, with local community netball and soccer teams facing off against teams from the Germiston SAPS and Johnson Matthey SA.

Representatives from the departments of community safety, social development and health, as well as Sanca and People Opposing Women Abuse (Powa), addressed the guests during lunch.

Each department and/or organisation explained how they were involved in the community and gave residents details on how they could be contacted in the future.

The company deemed the day a success, with approximately 500 people joining in the festivities.
