The top four stories on www.germistoncitynews.co.za for the week, June 18 to June 24, were:

1. Roads blocked by burning rubbish, tyres, as residents protest: https://bit.ly/28OkuJ9

Protestors took to the streets surrounding the Makause informal settlement in Primrose, on Wednesday morning, burning tyres and rubbish. Stanley, Pretoria, Shamrock and Main Reef roads, around the settlement, were blocked off by rocks and piles of burning rubbish. EMPD officers stationed themselves at all the intersections to warn motorists and redirect traffic away from the area.

2. SPCA tackles severe case of animal hoarding — 43 dogs confiscated: https://bit.ly/28IqRNz

In one of the most severe cases of animal hoarding ever encountered by the Germiston SPCA, 43 Maltese terriers were confiscated from a house in Sunnyridge, on June 7. Trainee inspector Thabang Mabaso received a complaint of overcrowding and dogs not being cared for adequately at a home in Sunnyridge. He managed to make contact with the owner and arranged to get access to the house on June 6. Upon his arrival, Mabaso was shocked to find a large number of Maltese terriers living inside the house.

3. EMPD continue to monitor Makause protest: https://bit.ly/28UU1uF

The residents of the Makause informal settlement took to the streets, on Wednesday morning, in what was believed to be a service delivery protest. EMPD officers stationed themselves at all the intersections of Stanley, Pretoria, Shamrock and Main Reef roads to warn motorists and redirect traffic away from the area. Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, told the GCN that there was very little violence during the protest.

A woman was allegedly beaten by her 34-year-old boyfriend after he accused her of cheating, recently. “The victim told police that she was working at a tuckshop in the Makause informal settlement when her boyfriend came to borrow money. He later accused her of cheating and beat her,” said communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.
