Detective offered a bribe in his own office, man arrested

A businessman offered to pay R5 000 for his case to go away.

A 32-year-old man got quite a shock when he was arrested after trying to give a Germiston SAPS detective a R5 000 bribe, in the detective’s own office, on Wednesday.

At about 9.10am, the man, who is a suspect in a case regarding the contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act, went to the Germiston Police Station to speak to the detective who is currently investigating his case.

“He went to the detective’s office with the aim of bribing the detective in charge with an amount of R5 000.

“He wanted his case to be finalised without the correct procedures being followed,” said Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston SAPS.

“The suspect took the money out of his pocket and forced the police detective to take it, and said he must drop his case.

“It is a very serious case, amounting to R750 000 for the businessman.”

The officer immediately arrested the man and the money was booked in as an exhibit.

The suspect is currently being detained at the Germiston Police Station and will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
