Top five stories of the week

In case you missed this week’s top stories.

The top five stories on www.germistoncitynews.co.za for the week, June 11 to June 17, were:

Germiston residents are no longer surprised by power outages, as these seem to be a weekly, and in some areas of the city, a daily occurrence. However, residents of Elspark now face a new hurdle as the area is plagued by water supply interruptions sometimes lasting for days. “In one week alone our water has been off three times on June 7, 8 and 9,” said Gail Rushmer. “Every day we either have a burst water pipe or are without electricity.” Many residents in the area believe the metro’s lack of maintenance has caused the infrastructure to fail in the area.

Driving home from a birthday party, last Saturday night, turned into a scary experience for a local family. Samantha Julius, her five-year-old son Lejean, her mom Shariffa (all from Primrose) and Samantha’s boyfriend Kyle Jagwa (from Edenvale) were driving along Main Reef Road, in Malvern East, on their way home after dropping off a family member in Rosherville.

A 65-year-old man was shot and wounded during a housebreaking on Rigel Street, in Germiston. The robbery reportedly took place on Monday, June 13, at around 1.30pm. This according to Athlenda Mathe, media liaison officer for Netcare 911.

Acting on information regarding a man selling drugs in Delville, the Johannesburg Crime Intelligence team raided a house, last Wednesday, at 4.45pm. As the police officers tried to enter the suspect’s room at a house in Bapaume Road, the man tried to confuse them so that they would not go inside his room. “The officers did not let that intimidate them and they entered the suspect’s room and started to search it thoroughly,” said WO André de Jager, spokesman for the Germiston SAPS.

The foretelling of the future is often seen as being cloaked in mystery and something which is almost taboo. The GCN recently caught up with Elspark resident Alex the Fortune Teller, as he is known, to unravel a bit of the intrigue.
