Future careers showcased at hospital

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital invited nine school girls to the hospital as part of the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day initiative.

The Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day saw many companies opening their doors to young school girls, last Thursday (May 26).

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital invited nine girls from schools in Germiston and Bedfordview, as well as staff members’ daughters, to spend the day at the hospital.

The girls were taken on a tour of the hospital and taught about each of the wards and the various services the hospital offers.

Hospital CEO Dr Nokwethemba Mtshali-Hadebe, the youngest hospital CEO in South Africa, shared some words of wisdom with the girls before encouraging them to interact with the hospital’s mangers and heads of departments.

Dr Nonhlanhla Sikakane, obstetrician and gynaecologist, encouraged the girls to focus on their school books instead of boys.

All the girls were thrilled with their time spent at the hospital.

“I found the experience very interesting; witnessing a sonar was my favourite part of the day.

“I also enjoyed the talk from the CEO, who encouraged us to follow our passion,” said Lindokuhle Mavuso.
