Four speedsters nabbed by EMPD

EMPD nab four speedsters on the N3 highway, including one extremely drunk man on a mission.

The EMPD High Speed Enforcement Unit conducted an operation between 7am and 8.30am, last Sunday, and arrested four drivers for excessive speeding.

The operation took place on the N3 highway southbound near the Rand Airport exit.

“The four arrestees included a male driver in a Mercedes Benz sedan found to be in a drunken stupor,” said Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

“The evidently drunk Mercedes Benz driver could hardly alight from his vehicle and found it difficult to string a coherent sentence together.

“He claimed that he was on his way to confront his ex-husband with whom he had a serious bone to pick.”

This 35-year-old Mercedes driver was arrested after he was clocked at 165km/h.

He was charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving while under the influence of intoxicating alcohol.

Officers doubted the credence of his claims as he was highly intoxicated.

The remainder of the arrestees were caught doing speeds of 167, 166 and 165km/h.

Charges of reckless and negligent driving were laid against them at the Germiston Police Station and they were later released on bail of R1 000 each.

The drivers were all expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on May 23.
