Many residents were left without power, yet again, on Thursday. The GCN contacted the metro to find out what had caused this outage and when power would be restored. “An equipment fault at the main Elsburg substation was the cause of the outage,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

The EMPD’s Bumper to Bumper operation targeted motor vehicles in Germiston, Heriotdale and Delmore Gardens (in Boksburg), recently. “Fifty-four motor vehicles found to be in a terrible state to be on public roads were impounded and 68 vehicles with less minor defects were discontinued and instructed to go for a re-test,” said spokesman for the EMPD Wilfred Kgasago.

The EMPD recently arrested a 30-year-old man in the Moleleki section of Katlehong. The man was found to be in the possession of a hijacked motor vehicle and an unlicensed firearm, after officers followed a signal from the vehicle’s tracking system.

The Germiston City News is encouraging the community to report any water leaks, electricity outages or other municipal complaints to the metro (see GCN, May 13). This will allow the team to follow up on the complaints with the metro.

EMPD and SAPS members joined forces with the Prasa (Metrorail) Protection Services, recently, with the objective of apprehending those who travel on trains without tickets, traders operating illegally on the platforms, as well as to search for dangerous weapons. Forty-five suspects were arrested and most of the traders on the platform were issued with stern warnings to only operate within the areas demarcated for trading.
