Truck hijacker killed in Zonkezizwe

Victims of hijacking may face murder charges after hijacker was shot in the head.

On Thursday, May 12, it is alleged that three men hijacked a truck on the N3 close to Zonkezizwe.

Two of the men took the truck to the Maputo border while the third stayed behind with the truck’s driver and passenger.

“According to the information received, the two victims were kept in a mealie field at Sunriseview in Zonkezizwe while the two suspects drove the truck to Maputo.

“It was agreed that the man left behind would guard the victims until the other men reached the border with the truck,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications official for the Katlehong SAPS.

The men had their hands bound.

“The accused went to sleep forgetting that he was with the two truck hijacking victims.

“The victims managed to untie themselves and took a firearm from the suspect,” Ndobe said.

During the struggle that followed the suspect was shot twice in the head, and died on the scene.

“The victims managed to run to the Zonkezizwe Police Station where they explained what happened to officers on duty,” said Ndobe.

“A murder case was opened for a court decision and neither of the two victims has been arrested for murder.”

Police continue to track the hijacked truck.
