Creating a place for the community

The GCN caught up with local businessman Barry Munro and chatted to him about his goals.

His goal is to create a place where the community can get together and enjoy good company and interesting events.

And Barry Munro, the owner of the Mustang Diner and Car Wash, is on his way to achieving this.

Barry opened the business in October, last year, and so far has held a number of community events, always with a charitable slant.

“I believe in giving back to the community and helping where we can,” Barry said.

The Kensington resident founded Mamba Security 24 years ago, in Klopper Park.

The company then opened its doors in Edenvale and is now also operating in Primrose Sector Two (this franchise is owned by Elaine Griffin).

“I have had great success with Mamba and it has won Business of the Year awards a number of times.

“I was also once a runner-up in the Top 20 Boss of the Year Awards, which was really a big achievement for me,” Barry said.

The astute businessman also has another side.

He is an artist.

Barry works mainly in oils and enjoys painting wildlife and landscapes.

His work, along with that of other artists, is on display at the diner and 30 per cent of every painting sold is given to a charitable cause.

He also allows local crafters to display their goods at the diner in order to help them generate income.

Asked what he enjoys most in the world, Barry said: “I love the bush and muscle cars, the Mustang in particular.

“A highlight in my life was also being the proud recipient of a Paul Harris Award from Rotary, 10 years ago.”

He has a collection of over 1 000 model cars (all Mustangs) on display at the diner.

Barry also loves spending time with his daughters, Dominique (30), Samantha (29) and Jade (7).

The business offers patrons lots of exciting specials on car washes and food, and also boasts a massage studio, where clients can relax while waiting for their vehicles.

Barry has recently started the Mustang Diner and Car Wash Club, which offers members unlimited car washes, prizes and discounts.

Two charity events are planned at the business for the near future.

On May 26, at 6pm for 6.30pm, a beading workshop will be held.

The entrance fee will be a donation to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and people can learn how to make beaded jewellery.

The second event is a Bingo night, set to take place on June 4, at 6pm for 6.30pm.

All proceeds of this event will go to Elandspark School.

These events will take place on a monthly basis, with Bingo on the first Saturday of the month and the beading workshop on the last Thursday of the month.

“Ideally, I want to have events on a daily basis and, in this way, people will enjoy something different while we raise funds for charity,” Barry said.
