Gerdview author in her element

Local author Toni Cox’s first book Elemental Rising has hit the shelves, and she is thrilled.

At the end of a long day many of us seek the escape that only a good book can bring.

Toni Cox, who was born in Germany and moved to SA in 1991, and to Gerdview in 2010 is no different. However, she escapes into her own fantasy world, a world we can now be a part of with the release of her first novel, Elemental Rising.

The book is a lifelong dream come true for Toni who has worked in timber sales for more than 20 years.

“Though I only started writing at the beginning of 2015 I always wanted to share the world I had been imagining since I was young,” she said.

Toni took the plunge as an author after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis in 2013.

“There is no cure for any of these diseases and I will have to be on treatment for the rest of my life,” she explained.

“I struggled with it for a long time, before finding the treatment I am currently on, and began to question my future employability.

“I said to myself I have this story in my head and maybe if I can’t work in 10 years time it will be something to fall back on.

“So in January 2015 I started writing Elemental Rising and in February, this year, the book was published by AuthorHouse UK.”

Toni has always loved creative writing and is already on chapter three of the second book in the Elemental trilogy, entitled Elemental Betrayal, with many more future books already lined up.

“The writing is not a financial crutch, as with new treatment I still have many working years ahead of me. It is an absolute passion,” she said.

Toni has been supported through the process by husband Darren, son Joshua (19) and daughters Jamie (15) and Wendy (13).
