Trenches still lying open

The residents of Elsburg feel they are being ignored by the metro as trenches dug over five months ago are still open.

“It seems our complaints have fallen on deaf ears,” said Elsburg resident William Fletcher.

His words come after the metro failed to address the state of the pavements in Brug Street, in Elsburg.

The GCN previously reported (GCN, March 11) on the poor state of the pavements, with a number of residents and a local store owner having reported the matter to the metro, with no results.

Children from Laerskool Elsburg and Hoërskool Elsburg, as well as pedestrians in the area, cannot walk on the pavements and are instead forced to walk in the busy streets.

Since the matter was last reported to the GCN, Fletcher said that trenches which cross several streets, including Dollie, Van Riebeek and Brug streets, are getting deeper and deeper

“I know some vehicles have been damaged by the trenches.

“The vehicle’s owners are currently getting legal advice on how to claim from the metro,” he said.

The trenches were dug over five months ago, but it has not been confirmed why this was done.

“It is absolutely disgusting. It’s no wonder that Germiston looks like a dump,” said Fletcher.

The GCN sent numerous queries to the metro to find out why the pavements were dug up and when they would be repaired and restored, but no comment had been received at the time of going to press.
