A 31-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning in the Ngema Section of Katlehong North, after shooting a police officer in the hand.
The man was charged with attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The arrest took place during a patrol of the area.
“Officers located two men after receiving a tip-off from community members that the men were up to no good,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong SAPS.
“However, as officers approached them, they ran away.”
Officers gave chase, during which one of the men fired a shot at them.
The officers were able to corner one of the suspects and, during a struggle, the accused fired a shot into an officer’s hand.
“They were able to overpower the man and he was arrested and a firearm with one magazine containing four rounds of live ammunition was confiscated,” said Ndobe.
The injured officer was rushed to hospital for medical attention, while the accused will appear in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court soon.
