EMPD raids streets, targeting illegal hawkers

Thousands of counterfeit goods were seized by EMPD officers during a raid in Katlehong and Thokoza.

The EMPD, bent on cleaning the pavements which are obstructed by hawkers, throwing the book at illegal hawkers and ensuring that counterfeit goods are removed, raided streets in both Katlehong and Thokoza, where hawkers ply their trade.

The streets targeted were Khumalo, Hospital and Kgotso.

The operation, called “Bumper to Bumper”, was conducted last Tuesday, between 2pm and 10pm.

In addition, 58 dressed mannequins, 42 purses, various portable electrical appliances, taps, door handles, belts, shoes and dangerous rat poison were confiscated when the hawkers bolted after seeing the Metro Police approaching their stalls.

One hawker, using a “rented” permit, was slapped with a R200 fine for obstructing pedestrians on a pavement and was also issued with a written warning for operating with a permit not issued in his name.

Hawkers whose goods were confiscated are advised to re-claim them at the EMPD storage rooms in Vosloorus.

They must bring along their operating permits, as well as R200 towards a fine for obstructing the pavement.

The storage fee is R150.
