Boiler room explosion at local factory

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) respond to a fire at a factory on Thursday.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) received a call at around 5am on Thursday, April 7, to help battle a blaze at the Gayatri Paper Milling Company.

Initial reports from the scene stated that the cause of the fire was an explosion in the company’s boiler room.

“When teams arrived at the company in Power Street they found bales of paper and cardboard on fire,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“Sigma Road was closed to traffic by firefighters but was reopened by 6pm on Thursday evening.”

No casualties were reported.
