Security guard nabs would-be thief

A security guard at a local sub-station nabbed a man who, he claimed, tried to steal copper cables.

The Primrose police recently arrested a 29-year-old man.

The suspect, who is charged with the theft of copper cable, was handed over to police by the security guard at the Germiston South sub-station, in Stanley Road, Primrose.

The security guard called officers to the sub-station after he allegedly saw the man cutting copper cables.

“He approached the accused but, before he could reach him, the accused ran away,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The security guard chased after the man and managed to corner him.

“We thank the security guard for his efforts and for not taking the law into his own hands,” added Maome.

The man was detained at the Primrose Police Station pending his appearance in the Germiston Magistrates Court.

His case has since been postponed for plea and trial.
