Women show they care by cutting their hair

Five brave women cut their hair for Cansa.

Glam Girl Hair and Beauty Studio was full of the sound of laughter and excitement last Friday when five women met to cut their hair.

Although this is what you would expect to happen at a hair salon, the purpose of the women’s visit was very different.

It was not to get all glammed up and looking good but rather to cut their hair to donate to Cansa.

Winnette van Niekerk, Alison Labuschagne, Lisa Crichton and Belinda van Heerden (a hairstylist at the salon) all decided to cut off their ponytails and donate the hair to Cansa, while a very brave Bridgette Ferreira went the whole hog and shaved off all her hair for donation purposes.

The women had to cut a minimum of 25cm off their ponytails and then Cansa uses four ponytails to make one wig for cancer sufferers.

Winnette told the GCN that she does this every second year as she feels it is important to make a contribution to cancer sufferers.

“I think losing your hair must be one of the worse things to happen while undergoing treatment and I will continue to cut my hair for Cansa while I can,” she said.

Owner of Glam Girl, located in Rietfontein Road, Primrose, Andri du Toit said that this is the first year the salon has been involved in helping Cansa.

“Next year we will definitely hold a shavathon and get more involved,” she said.

Once the women’s hair had been cut, the stylists at the salon added shape to their new looks, as well as some colour.

The hair was handed over to Cansa by Winnette at the Cansa Relay for Life which took place in Boksburg, last Friday.
