Nine fun things to do while the lights are off this Earth Hour

Switch off your lights and help to save the planet today.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by the WWF.

Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.

Since then it has grown to engage more than 7 000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement.

Earth Hour takes place today (March 19), from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

All you need to do is simply switch off your lights, and this simple action saves a whole lot of energy.

While the lights are off, here are nine fun things to do:

1. Have a candlelit dinner using menus from celebrity chefs.

2. Invite friends around for a pub quiz and board games by candlelight.

3. Take a wildlife walk or go star-gazing.

4. Go for a night-time city walk.

5. Go for a night-time bike ride.

6. Try candlelit yoga or exercise.

7. Have an unplugged jam session at home.

8. Read a bedtime story by candlelight.

9. Get a light switch-widget for your website.
